Our Magnificent Journey
Chapter 9
Europe 2007
London, Tuscany, Paris

Monday
Day 6
Rome

Carol had a rough night - too much bubbly. We woke at 11 a.m., called Brett to express our regrets for missing them at the Vatican as planned. We very much enjoyed meeting these two beautiful kids, and we feel certain that at some point we will meet up with them again. They very sweetly invited us to their wedding in March 2009 in Brazil. His mom and her friend are arriving in Rome at 2 p.m., so it seems unlikely that we will be able to connect with them today, and tomorrow they head back to London , where they currently live, and we are off to Firenze.

At noon, Carol and I ventured out into sunny Rome. She is wobbly, but some cappuccino and pastry seemed to revive her.

We decided to tour the Vatican, so we jumped on the number 23 bus, and jumped off just outside the Vatican. We were surprised at how quickly we found ourselves inside magnificent St. Peter's.

At St. Peter's

Today is quite warm, so we are moving in slow motion. We slowly took in the majesty of cavernous St. Peter's, then walked several blocks to the Vatican Museum. We entered quickly but had to wind our way through whole hoards of large tour groups for at least an hour and a half, past countless priceless artifacts, until we came to the Sistine Chapel and the wonderful ceiling by Michelangelo, which is breathtakingly beautiful and colorful. It was very crowded however, and we were glad to soon find ourselves outside.

We bought tickets for a "jump-on-jump-off" bus and enjoyed sightseeing from the vantage point of the top deck in the cool air as we rested.

Where do you want to go next?

We jumped off near the hotel in Trastevere and had dinner of quattro formaggi pizza, fettucini and beer. The restaurant, Vincenzo Alla Lungaretta, was just around the corner from the hotel and the food was excellent.

Given last night's late revelry, we decided to call it a night at 8:30 p.m. Even though we got a late start today, we managed cram quite a lot in. We fell into a deep sleep at 9 p.m.
