Woke to a cool gray Vermont morning. Grabbed a decent breakfast in the motel dining room, then packed, checked out and headed west across the state. Our target for tonight is Brattleboro, 60 miles west of Quechee/Woodstock. We will drive across the state of Vermont today.

We are very impressed with the beautifully manicured and clean scenery along all of Vermont’s highways, which are all billboard-free.

We enjoyed an unhurried and pleasant drive southwest to Bennington, where we had a terrific lunch at the famous Blue Benn diner, a must-do in this part of Vermont. It is very much like going back in time for an hour. Thank you, Carolyn, for the tip.

On the way out of the Blue Benn diner we met Dennis and Karen from Sutter Creek, California. We enjoyed comparing travel notes for at least half an hour and then had to wish them safe travels.

On the road again, we headed back east on Vermont Rt. 9 for another hour or so before pulling into Brattleboro. Parked the car and then wandered in and out of several impressive arts and craft galleries.

At 5:30 pm we checked into the Brattleboro Holiday Inn Express (surprisingly large, clean, quiet room with a comfortable king-sized bed.)

|
The night being cool and wet (a light rain,) we drove 2 blocks to a nearby movie theatre where we watched “Social Networking” (quite good) then drove into the heart of Brattleboro at 9 pm. The town is fairly deserted and closed down at this time of night but we found Frankie’s Pizzeria, ordered a pizza to go, took it across the street to McNeill’s Brewery where Carol played darts while I sampled the local high-octane stout.

At 10 pm it was time to head back to the Holiday Inn Express and by 11 we were dead to the world after another incredible day of exploration in the beautiful state of Vermont.
