Our Magnificent Journey
Chapter 13
2011
Greece, Turkey and Spain

Day 11
Santorini

We both slept incredibly well in our comfy bed in our cave house.

At 8:30 am we enjoyed another delicious breakfast of yogurt, honey, eggs, fruit, juice and coffee on our terrace several hundred feet above the calm, clear Aegean. The morning is cool, sunny and breezy.

After breakfast we rented a little 5-speed Nissan Micra in Fira and drove north to Oia. Walked among the thousands of “cruisers,” snapped many photos, then enjoyed a lunch of swordfish, rice and salad in the shade.

We left Oia and headed south along the caldera side of the island. Stopped at Red Beach and rented two beach chairs and a large umbrella and rested in the shade. Quite a few women are topless. A couple of dogs strolled by and stayed for a visit. It is sunny and warm but there are delightful breezes and the cool blue Aegean laps at our feet on the volcanic red sand beach.

Ahhhhh

At 3 pm we hiked back across the red beach, up the rocks, and found the Micra. Drove across the island towards Fira, stopping at churches, markets, olive trees and tomato orchards, finally locating the car rental where we returned the Micra.

Walked back to the hotel, rested and showered. Began organizing our packing for Turkey. Did a couple of loads of laundry and schmoozed with our Aussie neighbors.

Walked at sunset back to Mama Thiras for another memorable dinner of bread with a garlic dip, Santorini salad, grilled octopus, grilled squid, chilled local white wine, chocolate lava cake with ice cream, and iced ouzo. Our Aussie neighbors came in (we seem to be following each other around the island) and we enjoyed comparing travel experiences with them. We also enjoyed playing with the waitresses’ dog.

Left the restaurant and slowly walked the winding narrow alleys of Firostefani. At night the soft lights accent the whitewashed hillside in pastel colors. It is easy to see why Santorini is one of the world’s top travel destinations.

Got home to our cave house late and drifted off to sleep as the cruise ships slowly wandered into the harbor during the night.
