Woke to the sound of chanting coming from the Greek Orthodox Church 20 yards from our hotel. Sunday mass has drawn locals and tourists alike.

The day is sunny, cool and breezy. We walked down to the crescent –shaped shop- and restaurant-lined old Venetian harbor and enjoyed a continental breakfast in the shade as we watched the morning come alive. |

Checked out of the Vilelmine Hotel at 11 am, thanked Maria for the terrific hospitality, then found the car and drove 140 km back into Heraklion. Returned the little VW Golf at the airport and then took a cab to our hotel, the Marin Dream, a nice modern hotel located in the old port area. Our room on the 5th floor has a terrific view of the old port, the cruise ships, and the azure Aegean.

Settled into the Marin Dream and then left the hotel and wandered west, stopping at the Ouzeri Tou Terzaki for a lunch of fisherman’s spaghetti, fava beans, eggplant and zucchini croquets. Mythos beer was a perfect accompaniment and thirst quencher. |

The lunch was delicious and there was enough spaghetti for four people – we had to ask for a doggie bag.

After lunch we wandered around the shop-lined streets of the old port. There are cats and dog everywhere, who inhabit, and seem to own, the streets.

|
We were exhausted after lunch so we walked back to the hotel and napped. At 6 pm we woke and sat on our 5th floor balcony watching the hustle and bustle of dockside Heraklion as the sun slowly sank beneath the Aegean’s western horizon. |
|
Late in the evening we went down to the lobby to check email. Watched a bit of English soccer, then decided to get to bed early since we have to catch a 9:30 am ferry to Santorini. |
