Our Magnificent Journey
Chapter 13
2011
Greece, Turkey and Spain

At the Parthenon

Monday
Day 3
Athens

Slept soundly and woke at 6:30 am, enjoyed a delicious Greek breakfast of coffee, fruit, fresh yogurt, lentils, pasta and rice pudding. We had arranged a walking tour of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Parliament building, the Royal Gardens and the Temple of Zeus (Acropolis and City Tour) so at 9:30 am we met up with our guide, Despina Savvidou (of Athens Walking Tours,) and spent the next 3 hours being thoroughly enthralled, educated, enlightened and entertained. Over the years we have enjoyed countless guided tours, but Despina's knowledge, charisma, patience and charm put her head and shoulders above all the rest. In fact, we signed up for her afternoon tour of the new Acropolis Museum. Although our feet were begging us for relief, we would gladly have followed Despina for several more hours. Worth every Euro and we give her tours 5 stars.

Back to the hotel to rest and freshen up at 4:30 pm under a gray sky threatening rain.

Walked out at 5:15 pm under a light drizzle and headed northwest to Monastiraki area in search of Café Abyssinia, recommended to us by our dear friends, Mike and Annette, who have been to Greece countless times.

On the way to Café Abyssinia we wandered meandering streets just east of the Acropolis. We keep climbing until we reached an area with beautiful colorful houses draped with grapevines. We were lost but we thoroughly enjoyed the area.

Dinner consisted of white wine from the Attica area, whitebait (fish) in olive oil and garlic, fava-bean puree with onions and capers, fresh grilled sardines and taramasalata with dark bread. A delicious and memorable traditional Greek meal. We highly recommend Café Abyssinia.

We walked into a light but steady evening rain, umbrellas in hand. We exhausted ourselves today so we took the metro back to the hotel and fell into bed to the sound of thunder.
